What Are the Different Types of Meditation, and How Can They Benefit You?

Life feels busy-work, family, relationships, responsibilities, and the never-ending stream of notifications mean there is so much going on that it can be hard to slow down and just be present. Sometimes we get so busy taking care of everything around us, we forget to make space for us.

Meditation offers a simple way to pause.

You don't have to be a meditation guru to get started you can begin right now with a few easy meditation exercises. To meditate means to take a moment or two to notice your surroundings, your thoughts, or even simply to concentrate on your relaxation.

There are a variety of meditation techniques, so everyone can find something unique and close in each of them. As part of the holistic approach to wellness, mindfulness at Find Your Lite leads to increased awareness, harmony, balance, and moments of presence in every area of life as well as proper self-care.

What Is Meditation?

Meditation is a practice that encourages you to focus your attention and become more aware of the present moment.

Depending on the technique, you may focus on your breath, body, thoughts, sounds, a mantra, or feelings of compassion.

Meditation isn't about completely stopping your thoughts your mind is allowed to wander. The practice is noticing when your attention moves away and gently bringing it back.

Over time, meditation can become a meaningful part of your wellness routine, and healing journey.

What Are the Different Types of Meditation?

1. Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness meditation is focusing one's awareness on the present without judging. During the practice, one may notice their breathing, the surrounding sounds, physical sensations, or even thoughts as they come up in the mind.

By learning to bring one's attention to the present moment, mindfulness helps to raise one's self-awareness and to create a better understanding of one's thought processes and emotions.

Mindfulness can be a great practice for beginners, as it does not require any special techniques.

2. Guided Meditation

Guided meditation comprises listening to a guide who helps one to meditate. The guides gives instructions such as breathing exercises, directions on what to imagine, and how to relax or think about certain themes. Guided meditation is perfect for people who are new to meditation or find it hard to sit through a session on their own.

3. Breath Awareness Meditation

Your breath is always with you, making it an accessible focus for meditation.

Breath awareness meditation involves bringing your attention to the natural rhythm of your breathing. You notice the inhale and exhale and gently return your attention to your breath whenever your mind wanders. Breath awareness is great for stressful moments, or when you need to take a moment to come back to yourself.

This can be especially useful when you need a simple mindful pause during a hetic day.

4. Loving-Kindness Meditation

Loving-kindness meditation is a practice that brings out the benevolent in you, this meditation usually calls for silently saying certain supportive statements or phrases.

A great mediation when dealing with difficult situations and/or people. It’s wanting for others what you would want for yourself.

It is a great way for people to remind themselves to be as kind to themselves as they usually are to everyone around them.

5. Body Scan Meditation

Body scan meditation brings your attention to different areas of your body.

One of my favorite mediations to do to encourage body awareness. You may begin with your feet and gradually move your attention upward, noticing physical sensations without trying to change them. This practice can create an opportunity to slow down and reconnect with yourself.

6. Walking Meditation

Meditation doesn't always mean sitting still.

Walking meditation combines gentle movement with mindfulness. Instead of rushing through your walk, you intentionally notice your steps, breathing, surroundings, and sensations. It can be a simple way to bring mindfulness into everyday movement. Great for hikes, nature walks, and to clear your head after an argument or difficult experience.

7. Mantra Meditation

Mantra meditation involves the repetition of words, phrases, and sounds over time to focus. By simply repeating a mantra, you give your mind a firm place to focus during times of distraction. Really powerful for shifting stuck energy and/or manifestation.

8. Sound Meditation and Sound Bath Practices

Sound can also become a powerful focus for mindfulness. When I’m guiding a sound bath I’ll encourage participants to feel the sound just as much as they hear it.

During a sound bath, one might hear soothing music produced by singing bowls, chimes, or gongs. Sound bath creates an opprotunity for deep rest or to just sit back and enjoy listening and breathing during the process.

Sound bath mediation is one of the most sought after wellness experiences I offer due to it’s ability to promote relaxation, meditation, reflection, and self-care.

Which Meditation Is Best for Stress and Anxiety?

There is no one meditation that fits everyone, depending on your preference, lifestyle, and experience, different practices may feel more supportive.

I think Sound bath meditation is a great place to start it’s how I found my way into my own mediation practice. In sound bath even though you’re laying down and listening to the sound you are in a alpha state so you will still notice thoughts, feelings, sensations and be able to come into deep presence.

Breath awareness meditation comes in as a close second as it can be a simple tool to help you pause and connect back into your breath.

Then Guided meditation can be a helpful as it provides more structure for beginners.

Benefits of Meditation

All these forms of meditation can help with managing stress and anxiety through slowing down, reconnection with yourself, and creating moments of calmness and mindful awareness in everyday life.

It is important to see meditation as a form of self-care, not as a replacement for mental health services if you need them.
