Sometimes the Wellness Retreat Finds You

There are seasons in life when you know you need something different, even if you can't fully explain what that something is.

A few years ago, I found myself in one of those seasons.

From the outside, everything looked fine. I was showing up for my responsibilities, supporting the people I loved, and moving through my days the best way I knew how. But internally, I felt disconnected from myself. I was tired in a way that sleep couldn't fix. I was carrying stress that had become so familiar that I almost stopped noticing it.

I knew I needed rest, but more than that, I needed restoration.

That's when I began exploring the world of women's wellness more intentionally. I started reading books, listening to conversations about healing, and seeking spaces where women could be honest about their experiences without judgment.

One of the resources that supported me during that time was discovering wellness podcasts for Black women. Hearing women share stories about healing, boundaries, self-care, faith, purpose, and personal growth reminded me that I wasn't alone in what I was feeling. Those conversations planted a seed.

The more I listened, the more I realized that wellness wasn't something I could continue postponing until life became less busy. Wellness had to become part of how I lived, and that realization eventually led me to a women's wellness retreat.

The Gift of Stepping Away

Before attending my first retreat, I imagined it would simply be a relaxing getaway.

I thought it would be a chance to rest, enjoy a beautiful environment, and take a break from my routine.

What I didn't expect was how much clarity I would gain by simply creating space.

When we are constantly moving, producing, solving problems, and caring for others, it becomes difficult to hear our own inner voice. We become experts at responding to everyone else's needs while losing touch with our own.

A women's wellness retreat creates an opportunity to pause.

Not because life suddenly becomes perfect.

Not because every challenge disappears.

But because stepping away from the noise allows us to reconnect with ourselves.

During those moments of reflection, I found myself asking questions I had avoided for far too long.

What do I need right now?

What am I holding onto that no longer serves me?

Where am I being called to grow?

Those questions didn't arrive with immediate answers, but they opened the door to deeper self-awareness.

Wellness Looks Different for Every Woman

One of the most beautiful lessons I learned is that there is no single definition of wellness.

For some women-wellness means learning how to rest without guilt.

For others, it means setting boundaries.

Sometimes wellness looks like therapy.

Sometimes it looks like prayer.

Sometimes it looks like movement, creativity, community, or simply allowing yourself to slow down.

The women I met on my journey all had different stories, different backgrounds, and different reasons for seeking healing. Yet there was a common thread connecting us.

We were all searching for a deeper relationship with ourselves.

That realization reminded me that wellness is not a destination we arrive at once and for all.

It's an ongoing practice.

What I Learned From Being in Community

There is something powerful about being surrounded by women who are committed to their growth.

Not because they have everything figured out.

But because they are willing to show up authentically.

In those spaces, I witnessed vulnerability become strength.

I watched women celebrate each other's victories.

I listened as stories of loss, resilience, joy, and transformation were shared.

And I was reminded that healing often happens in community.

Many of us have been taught to carry our burdens alone.

Yet some of the greatest breakthroughs occur when we realize we don't have to.

Community doesn't erase our challenges, but it reminds us that we are supported as we move through them.

The Wellness Journey Continues

One retreat did not magically transform every area of my life.

The stressors didn't disappear.

The responsibilities were still there waiting for me when I returned home.

But something had shifted.

I returned with a renewed commitment to myself.

I became more intentional about creating moments of rest.

I paid closer attention to what my mind, body, and spirit needed.

I continued learning through books, conversations, and wellness podcasts for Black women that encouraged me to prioritize my well-being.

Most importantly, I stopped treating wellness as a luxury.

I began seeing it as a necessity.

If You've Been Feeling Called to Pause

Maybe you've been feeling overwhelmed.

Maybe you've been carrying more than anyone realizes.

Maybe you've been pouring into everyone else while neglecting your own needs.

If so, I want to encourage you to listen to that inner voice.

The one reminding you that your well-being matters.

The one inviting you to slow down.

The one encouraging you to create space for healing.

Whether that journey begins with a journal, a conversation, a podcast, a new daily practice, or a women's wellness retreat, trust that the first step matters.

Sometimes the breakthrough isn't found in doing more.

Sometimes it's found in finally giving yourself permission to receive what you've needed all along.

And often, that is where true wellness begins.
